...Peter was most dreadfully frightened; he rushed all over the garden, for he had forgotten the way back to the gate. He lost one of his shoes among the cabbages, and the other shoe amongst the potatoes.
After losing them, he ran on four legs and went faster, so that I think he might have got away altogether if he had not unfortunately run into a gooseberry net, and got cought by the large buttons on his jacket. It was a blue jacket with brass buttons, quite new.
Peter gave himself up for lost, and shed big tears; but his sobs were overheard by some friendly sparrows, who flew to him in great excitement, and implored him to exert himself....

Pierino, morto di paura, scappò in giro nel giardino, si smarrì e non riuscì a trovare la via di uscita. Perse una scarpetta tra i cavoli e l'altra tra le patate.
Un coniglio corre meglio a piedi nudi e va certo più veloce. Sfortunatamente capitò in un arbusto coperto da una rete e vi restò preso dai grossi bottoni della sua giacchetta. Che imprudenza andare nel giardino coi bottoni grossi! Era una giacchetta turchina, proprio nuova con i bottoni dorati.
Pierino si credette perduto e scoppiò in pianto. Dei buoni passeri sentirono i suoi singhiozzi e volarano ad aiutarlo."Coraggio coniglietto, levati la giacchetta! Presto, presto! Ecco che arriva Don Gregorio!"...
"Un sorriso è una curva che raddrizza tutto!"
